A Day in London Bridge

No Comments Share:

When looking to stay in London there are a lot of options, One area I love Is London Bridge. There are plenty of great hotels in London Bridge to choose from and the area has so much to do. We spent a fun-packed Saturday around an area packed with history and something interesting on pretty much every corner. Not to mention amazing food and a brilliant pub culture. Here’s the places we loved:

A bit of history…

Golden Hind

The Golden Hind was a ship famously Captained by Sir Francis Drake to circumnavigate the globe between 1577 and 1580. This full size replica of the ship is an amazing sight to check out when visiting the area or you can also book tours of the ships where you can learn more about The Golden Hind and the voyage Sir Francis took her on.

Operating theatre museum

Housed in the attic of the early Eighteenth-Century church of the old St Thomas Hospital, this atmospheric museum offers an insight into the history of medicine and surgery. The museum includes the oldest surviving surgical theatre in Europe as well as some interesting and some bizarre medical items from the past.

The Clink Prison is a recreation of the famous Clink Prison, at a bargain £7.50 you can learn all about the history of the jail along with its many gory exhibits.  You even get a free photo of you behind the prison bars to remember your day!

Time for food!

Borough Market

When in the London Bridge area for food you have to go to the world-famous Borough Market, a covered food market that has been around since 1756. You will find great quality street food, as well as cheese mongers, bakers, butchers, and pretty much any sort of high quality fresh produce you can think of. On our visit I couldn’t resist a sausage roll from my favourite butcher, Ginger Pig. This thing was huge and packed with delicious pork straight out the oven….. mmm I think I need to go back!

The Market is also surrounded by pubs and restaurants one of those id defiantly recommend is Padella who make modern fresh pasta dishes in house in their tiny restaurant, but be warned there is always a line from opening although totally worth the wait.

If you like Tacos another top pick is the excellent El Pastor located on the edges of the market, the tacos are to die for. EL Pastor don’t take reservations but I’ve found it’s normally pretty easy to walk in without waiting.

Feeling thirsty?

London has a pub on almost every corner and the London Bridge area is no exception, here are a few of my favourites in the area.

The Rake

Borough Market, 14A Winchester Walk, London SE1 9AG

A small bar, hidden away on the outskirts of Borough Market. It’s not much to look at but The Rake is great for getting away from the madness of the busy market in their small beer garden. The Rake has an excellent rotation craft beer tap list as well as an impressive bottle selection in the fridge.

The Old Thameside Inn

Pickfords Wharf, Clink St, London SE1 9DG

This is a pub I always bring visitors to, especially if it’s a nice day. It sits by the River Thames with a lovely view of the city from one of the many outside tables, the Golden Hind is also moored up right next to the pub.

The George

The George Inn Yard, 77 Borough High St, London SE1 1NH

Owned by the National Trust, The George is London’s last remaining galleried inn dating back from the 17th Century. Charles Dickins was a regular and mentioned The George in his novel Little Dorrit. This pub with its massive courtyard is a must visit when in the area.
